Comic-Con or are in the San Diego area to experience ArtExpo SD. 

I am honored to announce that tonight, Thursday, July 24th 2014, my new video artwork titled CWTV: Double Feature will premiere before a talk with Pasadena illustrator Mark Todd at the ArtExpo SD. 

Kicking off at 5:30, SDX (formerly the San Diego Ad Club), presents a mini ArtExpo showcase premiering the new film short by Houston fine artist JooYoung Choi and SuperHero inspired talk by Pasadena fine artist Mark Todd (above).

This event was created by the students of the Media Design School of Digital Arts at the New School of Architecture and Design. 

Accomplished graphic designer, curator and artist Mark Murphy has organized a two floor show that brings together an eclectic exhibition of work by fine/commercial artists, and D.I.Y. creatives. 

Mark is passionate about visual art, and he has dedicated his time an energy to bring artists together, through both his book design firm Murphy Design, as well as his exhibitions.

Although I am still here in Houston, from what I have read, and Mark has shared with me, I feel that the show has been curated in a manner similar to a well executed painting: it is thoughtful, playful, creative and visually rewarding. 

The show consists of works from  over 150 artists, among them will be pieces from artists such as Esther Pearl Watson, Mark Todd, Cathie Bleck, Bonnie Marie Smith, Richard Downs, Irene Hardwicke Olivieri, Kevin Paulsen, The Juggling Klines, Marco Zamora, Elizabeth Winnel,Tim Mantoani, Marc Burckhardt, Brendan Danielsson, P-Jay Fidler, John Purlia, Sean Brannan and myself, JooYoung Choi.

About

The Big Show is Lawndale Art Center's annual open-call, juried exhibition. It has been an important venue through which emerging and under-represented Houston area artists gain exposure since the show's conception in 1984. The Big Show was formerly the East End Show, sponsored by the East End Progress Association, at Lawndale's original location.

Each year Lawndale Art Center invites a guest juror to select from work submitted by artists living within 100 miles of Houston. Artists are invited to bring up to three works of art, not previously shown in Houston, to Lawndale Art Center where the work is juried on-site for a chance to be included in the show and a shot at $3,000 in cash awards.

For this year's exhibition, a total of 115 works by 106 artists were selected by juror Erin Elder, Visual Arts Director, Center for Contemporary Arts, Santa Fe, for the exhibition from 981 works submitted by 382 artists. Artists selected for the exhibition include:

Erin Elder, Visual Arts Director
Center for Contemporary Arts
Santa Fe, NM

Erin Elder is the Visual Art Director of Center for Contemporary Arts in Santa Fe. Prior to taking this post in 2012, she worked as an independent curator, writer, and teacher for over twelve years, cultivating interests in experimental collaboration, sense of place, and expanded notions of culture. Her research has focused on counter-cultural education and art practices, with particular interest in those activities happening in the 1960s American Southwest. Her writing has been published by University of Minnesota Press, University of Houston Press, Proximity Magazine, and more. She has produced projects with a variety of institutions including Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Württembergischer Kunstverein, Creative Time, the Center for Land Use Interpretation, International Symposium on Electronic Arts and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver. She is a visiting lecturer at numerous schools and universities and has served as juror or reviewer for many international forums. Since 2009, she has cooperatively run PLAND, an off-the-grid residency program near Tres Piedras, NM. Erin holds dual self-designed BAs from Prescott College, and an MA in Curatorial Practice from California College of the Arts. She has been to Houston twice before and was very, very impressed.

Zoya Tommy Contemporary Gallery and ArtHouston are pleased to announce Snail Trail, a solo exhibition introducing emerging Houston artist Scott Rosenberg. The opening reception will be Friday, July 11th, from 6:00 – 8:30 pm and the show will run through Saturday, August 9th. 

Scott Rosenberg’s ceramic and mixed-media sculptures border on the fantastic. While deceptively crude and sometimes messy, he sculpts with purpose and sophistication, creating works that are enigmatically fun and playful but with hints of a lurking moodiness underneath.

With Snail Trail Rosenberg presents aspects of your average middle class garden intermixed with ancient pottery designs and seemingly banal everyday found objects mingled together, suggesting greater concepts such as male and female, life and death. Rosenberg rarely overthinks his work, however, creating pieces that lack pretention and avoid complex metaphors.

Scott Rosenberg was born in Milwaukee Wisconsin. He earned his BFA in ceramics from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2005 and his MFA from University of South Florida in 2012. Scott went on to participate in several residencies-one at Southern Methodist University in Dallas Texas, and a second in rural Napa Valley at Richard Carter Studios. Having traveled and studied abroad, he gathered experience and inspiration in New Zealand, Poland, and the Czech Republic.

Having exhibited in NY, CA with the Tompkins Project, as well as in TX and across the US, Rosenberg now currently lives and works in Houston, TX where he continues to make ceramic and mixed-media sculpture. This will be his first solo show with Zoya Tommy Contemporary.

ArtHouston is an annual summer event promoting Fine Art Galleries in Houston, TX. A day-long event, it will be the busiest day of the year with many galleries holding evening receptions. A wide range of work will be on display, from realist to abstract paintings, sculpture, mixed-media constructions, drawings and works on paper, collage, and photography. The featured artists are both emerging regional talents and established artists from around the world.

Ro2 Art is pleased to present CHAOS - a curated exhibition of small works featuring over 100 Ro2 artists and guests. After a dynamite inaugural year, the show returns to create another technicolor playground of artistic synthesis which aims to appeal to established as well as beginning collectors. The opening reception takes place Saturday, July 12, from 7 – 10pm. The exhibition is on view at Ro2 Art Downtown, located at 110 North Akard Street, in downtown Dallas, running through August 12, 2014.
